Bulbasaur process post

For my second piece for the muse monster show, I decided to draw a bulbasaur!  I started out doodling them during a class (when the best doodling is done).

As you can see I'm a very messy sketcher... but I picked my favorite then drew a more refined sketch of what I wanted:

I then painted him in acrylic so I could get some real textures scanned into the computer.

The final shapes were created and colored in Adobe Illustrator, but I added the textures on top of it in Photoshop. And Bulbasaur was born!

Monsters at Muse!

Without a doubt, the flying monkeys were always the creepiest part of the Wizard of Oz.   That's why I decided to draw them for an upcoming MONSTER EXHIBIT at Muse Music Cafe! (They also fit with Illustration Friday's theme "wings" btw)  On Friday night, Feb 1st at 7 pm, there will be a big art event at Muse Music, and I encourage you all to attend.  Lots of BYU students drew some crazy monsters to put on display.   The show will be up the whole month of February though, so you can stop by any time you'd like.

Merry Christmas!

If your childhood christmases were anything like mine, then they were full of excitement and a lot of wreckage from opening everyone's presents.  There was lots of chaos for mom and dad, but there was really nothing better.  Have a Merry Christmas everybody!

Exciting News!

One of my classmates and I were selected as finalists in the Hiii International Illustration Competition! Go Melissa! (see her art here)  2574 artworks were submitted from 60 countries around the world.  We both were 1 of 7 selected from the US in the unpublished category. Woot! Sometime this month they should announce the Grand Prize winners, but it's exciting that we've made it this far.
Go BYU Illustration! Represent!

Paper Cut Angel

It's the holiday season! I've been thinking a lot about how grateful I am for those in my life who have helped me get to where I am today. They are really my angels!
Happy Holidays everyone!

Buffets and Folktales

I have 2 new pieces to unveil! They are both pretty different as I am experimenting with different styles, but they were both created in my senior studio class.

The prompt for the first one was to create a piece around the theme of "buffet". My mind instantly went to the word "gluttony", and it was along those lines that I created this piece. "You are what you eat" takes on a whole new meaning doesn't it?

This second piece is based on the folktale called "The Panther".  This folktale was an early, more gruesome predecessor to the story we now know as Little Red Riding Hood. Basically it's a panther instead of a wolf, and he eats the mother and brother of these two sisters, dresses up like the mom, then decides to come after the girls for more.  Pretty exciting stuff.

Landscape Colors

As fall has come to visit us, I've gotten the chance to paint the beautiful colors that comes with it! The top painting is a study from Vivian Park up provo canyon. The bottom painting is based on all my studies that I've painted so far. I'm sad it is starting to get too cold to paint outside now!
